Promoting American Music

Rick BatesRick Bates and Nancy Meyer, founders of The Open Sky Music Foundation, Inc. have each spent over 30 years in the music industry. Their lengthy careers include working as artist managers for many important American songwriters and performers.

After graduating from San Jose State University, Bates began his career handling regional publicity for the Walt Disney Company in Northern California. He went on to become a talent agent for musicians, including work with John Hiatt, Robert Cray, The Neville Brothers and NRBQ to name a few. He subsequently became a personal manager for several blues artists, namely; John Lee Hooker, Otis Rush, Joe Louis Walker and Angela Strehli as well as rock artists Los Lobos, Violent Femmes and Bob Mould.

In addition to working with current blues talent from the next generation, Bates brings the blues to the airwaves for his weekly “Friday Night Blues On The Bear” which airs live on KBHR-FM. He is also the Music Director at KBHR, overseeing programming for this modern rock commercial station.

Additionally, Bates is the Director of the Events Resource Office for Big Bear Lake. In this position he works as an official liason with event promoters for music concerts, athletic competitions, film festivals and charity fundraisers. Via his Events Resource Office, Bates creates special seminars to assist local promoters with the success of new and ongoing events.

Nancy MeyerMeyer started working with Chicago blues greats Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Mighty Joe Young when she finished her degree in Communications (with a minor in Journalism) at Northern Illinois University. She traveled the world with these historic artists and handled all aspects of their careers including; touring, publicity, recording and publishing. Battling outdated agreements that divested many blues musicians from their intellectual property, she became well versed in copyright research and reclaiming creative rights.

Today, she still handles the royalty management for the families of T-Bone Walker, Lonnie Johnson, Memphis Slim and Ted Hawkins. Meyer is also a music clearance specialist working mostly in the documentary field for filmmakers needing assistance with the licensing of traditional blues, gospel and folk material. She is also the personal manager for Grammy Award winning jazz artists, vocalist Diane Schuur and saxophonist Ernie Watts.

Together, Rick Bates and Nancy Meyer continue to support, promote and honor the music that inspired them to establish The Open Sky Music Foundation.
