Blues For The Zoos
Blues For The Zoos
The Open Sky Music Foundation produced the musical program for the annual blues for the zoo fundraiser blues festival. Held for five years, the summer event generated profit, for the new Big Bear Alpine Zoo (formerly the Moonridge Animal Park), which started construction in 2016. The zoo is a fully licensed, care and rehabilitation facility for injured and confiscated animals. This unique Alpine animal rescue sanctuary rose from the ashes of the 1959 forest fires that devastated the natural eco-system of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is distinguished as the only zoological facility in the United States located in an Alpine/Sub-Alpine environment, dedicated to the preservation of its indigenous species.

The annual concert was located at the water’s edge, providing a scenic backdrop for an afternoon of internationally recognized musicians plus local arts and crafts. Area artisans showcased a variety of handmade products including; pottery, gourd art, jewelry, photography, original paintings, crystals and custom handbags.

Performers included; CJ Chenier, Lucky Peterson, Sherman Robertson, Maria Muldaur, Guy Davis, Michael Burks, Lurrie Bell, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Larry McCray, Cafe R&B and Brother Yusef. The event’s inaugural concert was in 2010.

Open Sky Music FestivalOPEN SKY MUSIC FESTIVAL

The foundation established the Open Sky Music Festival on the shores of Big Bear Lake in 1997, presenting folk, jazz and blues artists for a community looking to expand its recognition of the performing arts. The well-received event ran for eight years with talent such as Dave Alvin, Peter Case, Angela Strehli, Joe Louis Walker, Jimmy Thackery, Ernie Watts, the Anthony Wilson Trio, Bonne Musique Zydeco, Juke Logan, Doug MacLeod, Brian Bromberg, Margie Evans and The Delgado Brothers. Big Bear Lake is the crystal blue centerpiece of this rustic mountain town and the Open Sky Music Festival was established to promote cultural tourism in this unique Alpine environment. Developing an audience for roots music in the Southern California mountains led to the foundation’s involvement with the fundraiser program Blues For the Zoo.
